Undercover Panhandling
News 10 reporter Grayson Kamm played a role as a panhandler on the a median for 3 hours. He found out several truth about panhandling.
We catch to see the homeless looking person standing right next to your car asking for some help. Most of us just drive by them and they drive off to individual life.
Some would say that a panhandler is going to use money for drugs and alcohols. Other say that people are lazy to get a job and they are entitled to earn a dollar.
A reporter from News 10 dressed down and hold sign simply says “Thank you” on a median as a panhandler. His first 50 min he only earned 3 dollars.
A reporter mentioned that there are hole on the median where he stands. It is the place people stands to asking for help and it did leave a mark on the road.
Donations are stops and go just like a traffic. A lady hands him a dollar and offers him an ice cream.
A black car sits right next to the reporter jamming his tune like nobody else is around him. A man also looks at this undercover panhandler's eye.
Some people look straight ahead, some nods. Nobody yells at him, or rude to him.
Panhandling definition is to approach strangers and beg for money or food by a dictionary. Most of panhandlers are begging for their food to live.
Other news 10 reporter followed people to find out why they gave him a cash.
“I am a veteran myself. I will give money to veteran”. Kelly Leonard, driver, said.
Right across the street from him, they are a African American male holding a sign says that “Stranded hungry. Please in the name of Jesus. Please help. God bless. Thank you”. He is asking for whatever forks would spare him.
However, this man never served in his life. “I have to do what I have to do”. Rudy a panhandler said.
Rudy got out jail a while ago. He applied for jobs and evey jobs he apply got back at him disqualification.
“I average about $43 a day and my motel rooms is $39” Rudy said.
A women from home shelter gives a reporter $5. The woman does not make a lot money for herself, but she gave him a biggest cash to give a way.
“It amazes me”. Undercover panhandler Kamm said.
He earned $24 and 50 cents for his undercover panhandling during the time of 3 hours. It is clearly more than $7.25 an hour federal minimum wage.
Some people reach out to Kamm for more help than their spare cash. A woman told him to go to homeless shelter to get more help. They even offer the help to get him a job.
On the other hand, most people do not try to help in anyway. They said that they have seen the scam in the past.
Even though Kamm was on the road for 3 hours, it was hard for him to figure out why people give a way and why people do not.
News 10 donated charity with double of what Grayson Kamm made on that day to an established charity organization.
